The map focuses on bedrock geology, which it depicts in terms of 23 time-rock units. These units, distinguished by colour, range in age from Archaean to Cainozoic; the Archaean units include some of the world's oldest dated rocks - 3900 million years old. Colour-striping locally shows the intermingling of two or more time-rock units. Spot symbols indicate the general locations of Proterozoic mafic dyke swarms, Phanerozoic calc-alkaline dykes, the early Mesozoic tholeiitic dolerite intrusives.
